KSRTC plans to introduce 300 electric buses for short-distance connectivity, a green leap in Karnataka's public transit.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to bolster its commitment to sustainable transportation with plans to add 300 new electric buses. This strategic initiative aims to enhance connectivity for passengers in nearby districts of Bengaluru, focusing on short-distance routes and experimenting with the potential of electric buses in such scenarios.

KSRTC Expanding the Electric Fleet

  • Short-Distance Connectivity: The 300 electric buses are intended to serve passengers in nearby districts of Bengaluru, covering distances lower than 100 km. KSRTC is keen to explore the feasibility of electric buses on shorter routes as part of its green transportation initiatives.
  • Successful EV Pilot: KSRTC already operates 50 electric buses procured under the FAME II subsidy, covering distances primarily between Bengaluru and cities like Mysuru, Virajpet, Madikeri, Chikkamagaluru, Davangere, and Shivamogga.

KSRTC New Electric Buses Features and Specifications

  • Enhanced Range: The new buses will have a capacity to cover 180 km under a single charge, making them suitable for shorter routes. These 12-metre non-AC buses will also feature disabled-friendly amenities, aligning with inclusivity standards.
  • Short-Distance Operation: The buses are designed to operate within a range of 180 km for a to-and-fro journey, catering specifically to short-distance routes connecting Bengaluru to nearby districts.

Procurement Model and Cost Considerations

  • GCC Model: KSRTC plans to procure the new electric buses on the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, aiming for a seamless and efficient procurement process.
  • Potential Cost Increase: While the buses are being sourced on GCC contracts, officials anticipate a potential increase in operational costs in the absence of a central government subsidy. Despite this, KSRTC remains committed to advancing its green transportation initiatives.

KSRTC’s decision to add 300 electric buses underscores its dedication to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions. By experimenting with shorter routes, the corporation aims to assess the practicality and efficiency of electric buses, paving the way for a greener future in public transit.
