In a move aimed at providing affordable travel options for students, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has introduced concessional season tickets on the Kasaragod-Mangaluru route. The initiative aims to benefit students studying in various schools and colleges in the bordering areas of Karnataka’s Kasaragod district. Transport Minister Antony Raju made the announcement during a session at the Legislative Assembly. Acknowledging the unique situation in the Kasaragod-Mangaluru sector, the KSRTC governing body has decided to offer a 30% discount on season tickets for students traveling on this route.
Under this scheme, students will be issued a dedicated Radio Frequency Identity (RFID) card. With these season tickets, students can get 30 days of travel by paying only for 20 days, effectively receiving a 30% discount. To obtain the RFID card, students will need to pay an initial fee of ₹100. The card can then be recharged with amounts ranging from ₹100 to ₹2,000. To ensure the authenticity of the cards, the RFID will contain the student’s ID card numbers and photos, preventing any unauthorized swapping of cards. Additionally, students must carry their ID cards while traveling. Applications for RFID cards will be accepted at the unit level, and initially, the cards will be issued through the chief office and later through the respective units.
This move by KSRTC is expected to greatly benefit students who frequently travel between Kasaragod and Mangaluru for educational purposes. By offering discounted season tickets, KSRTC aims to alleviate the financial burden on students and promote accessible transportation options. The introduction of affordable travel facilities for students demonstrates the commitment of KSRTC towards supporting the educational community and ensuring their smooth and cost-effective commuting experience.
