The city of Vijayawada is located on the banks of the river Krishna, in Krishna district, in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Completely bounded in by hills and canals, this city is situated at an altitude of 36 ft above sea level and exhibits a tropical climate. Summers (March to May) are extremely hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 40 degree celcius in May, while the winters are relatively cool, temperatures ranging between 10 degrees to 30 degrees celcius, with January being the coldest month. The monsoons during the months of June to October, provide some respite from the extreme heat. However, the best time to visit Vijayawada would be during the months of October to March, when the weather is very pleasant and the overall ambience lovely.

How to reach Vijayawada:

By Bus : Vijayawada is well connected to the other parts of the country via its three national highways. The Pandit Nehru Bus Station has state-run APSRTC buses which operate a fleet of buses including the Metro Express, Ordinary and City Sheetal, offering added facilities like air-conditioning etc. The Volvo and private buses like the deluxe, ultra-deluxe, A/C etc. are operated by other private companies. The famous bus stations are the Pandit Nehru Bus Station, Vijayawada and Ibrahimpatnam, Vijayawada.

By Air : The Vijayawada Airport, situated 18 kms away from the city at Gannavaram, operates regular flights to other major cities of the country and has recently been upgraded from domestic to international in May 2017.

By Train : The Vijayawada railway station is one of the busiest of the Indian railways and is situated along the Howrah-Chennai main line and Delhi-Chennai line. It has trains running to all major Indian cities and towns and also to every city in the south. Vijayawada also has eight other railway stations catering to the huge rail traffic.

Some must-visit attractions in Vijayawada:

The Bapu Museum – Formerly known as the Victoria Jubilee Museum, this impressive Indo-European architectural style of building, is an archaeological museum containing a large collection of paintings, sculptures and artefacts of Buddhist and Hindu relics dating back to 2nd and 3rd centuries. A high-tech 3D mapping visualization is a new feature to look out for in this museum. Timings: 10.30 am to 5 pm on all days besides Fridays and Public Holidays.

Bhavani Island – This large island on the Krishna river is an idyllic locale for nature lovers. Bordered by the beautiful lush greenery of the river, this island offers one a chance to do some early morning bird-watching, just laze around fishing, dozing off on hammocks, enjoy a picnic with the family or indulge in several activities like kayaking, parasailing, water-skiing etc.

Undavalli Caves – This amazing architecture, carved out of a solid sandstone on a hillside, is located in the city of Guntur and has three levels created in the caves along with some artistic carvings of lions and elephants on the walls. The top of the cave provides a breath-taking view of the beautiful hillside and greenery. The attraction remains open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on all weekdays.

Kanaka Durga Temple – This temple of Dravidian culture, is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is held in great reverence by devotees and followers. The most impressive aspect of this temple is perhaps its golden crown, which can be spotted from miles away. People visit the Goddess every year to seek her blessings. The temple has detailed timings and rules of darshans and seva opportunities which can be booked online on their website.

Kondapalli Fort – This fort with a rich history is situated on a hill and has an impressive three storied rock tower protected by three levels of entries. The main entrance gate is made out of a single slab of granite and is known as the Dargah Darwaza.

Besant Road – This dynamic and vibrant place in Vijayawada has transformed into a hotspot of commercial activity. It houses some of the best eateries in town, boasts of more than 50 cinema halls and is generally a major source of entertainment for all.

Rajiv Gandhi Park – Developed by the Vijaywada Municipal Corporation, close to the Prakasam Barrage, this park is located near the Vijayawada bus station and houses a musical water fountain, a mini zoo, built-up structures of dinosaurs and pre-historic animals, an aquarium and many other attractions.
