Interesting Facts About Shirdi :

Shirdi is most renowned, as home of the late 19th century saint Sri Sai Baba. In fact, the Sri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust located here, is one of the richest temple organizations. Shirdi is a small village located in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra and is considered one of the holiest places in India, thus making it a very popular pilgrimage destination. Also known as the ‘Land of Sai’, Shirdi is revered for its power of fulfilling  wishes and power of healing.

As Shirdi exhibits a temperate climate throughout the year, the weather is mostly dry and ranges from warm to hot. Monsoons bring some respite from June to August, but it is the winters from November to February which is the best time to visit Shirdi. While one can visit the shrine at any time in the year, the temperature during this period ranges between 10 deg to 25 deg, making it very cool and pleasant.

This city has a huge inflow of visitors/ tourists who come especially to visit the shrine and enjoy the other attractions. The temple is really crowded on festival days and other days of significance, including Thursdays, which is the holy day for this saint. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation runs buses from Shirdi to nearby cities and towns and can be used for daily commute also, within the city. The Sri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust offers bus services from the railway station to the temple free of cost. Rickshaws and taxis are available in plenty to move around in the city.

How to reach :

By air: The nearest major airports are at Aurangabad and Pune, 115 km and 186 km respectively from Shirdi.

By train: Shirdi has a railway station called "Sainagar Shirdi". There are trains from Chennai, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Mysore and other cities/states that have Shirdi railway station as their terminal stop. Buses and taxis ply from these railway stations and locations to and from Shirdi.

By road: Shirdi can be reached by bus from any of the following cities in Maharashtra - Ahmednagar, Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nashik, Akluj, Dhule, Nagpur and Aurangabad.

Sri Sai Baba Sansthan Temple - The Sai Baba Temple in Shirdi is one of the most famous shrines in India and is worshipped by thousands of people throughout the year. The temple is dedicated to Sai Baba, who was a yogi and a fakir and venerated by all as a saint. The temple welcomes people of all religions, faith, caste and creed.

Timings: 4 am to 11.15 pm daily.

Dixit Wada Museum - Located close to the Sri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust within the same complex, this museum displays very old pictures  of Sai Baba with his followers, his long robe, leather padukas, smoking pipe, bathing stone, gramophone records, utensils and various other items used by him during his lifetime.

Timings: 10 am to 6 pm

Lendi Baug - This is the place where Sri Sai Baba used to go every morning and afternoon to water the plants. The huge Neem tree within this beautiful garden was Sri Sai Baba’s shelter from the heat and his resting place during his lifetime.

Chavadi - Towards the end of his life, Sri Sai Baba used to spend practically every alternate night at Chavadi. A procession would be taken out from here, with Sai Baba and his followers in a palki. Chavdi is located near Dwarkamai mosque and even today this procession ritual is carried out every Thursday, with the idol of Sai Baba inside the palki. Hence this place is very dear to Sai Baba followers.

Dwarkamai Masjid - Dwarkamai Masjid was mainly the place where Sri Sai Baba stayed for almost 60 years. The stone on which Sai Baba sat is also located near the mosque. During his time, Sai Baba used to light the sacred fire in the mosque and distribute the sacred ash (udi) from here to his followers, in the belief that it will cure them of all their sufferings. He used to cook food at this site and distribute it to his devotees. This mosque now displays oil paintings of the saint which are a big attraction.

Wet N Joy Water Park - One of the major water parks in India, the Wet n Joy Water Park in Shirdi has thrilling rides, major wave pools, rain dance and plenty more spread across a 10 acre land. This family oriented park has a wide range of restaurants and other facilities like lockers, changing rooms, swimming costumes, souvenir shops etc. As it is located very close to the Sai Baba Temple, visitors looking for a little relaxation can visit the park.
