Interesting Facts About Ongole :

Ongole is a city in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh. It is located to the west of Bay of Bengal on the east coast of India and has streams of the Gundlakamma river running through it. Situated on the plains, this city goes through some very hot summers from March to June, with temperatures as high as 44 degrees and is the recipient of both the South West and North East monsoons. This period may also see some cyclonic activity which mostly occurs around this time. The most pleasurable are winters from November to February, where the climate is cool and enjoyable and hence it would be the best time to visit this destination.

Ongole has passed through the hands of the Mauryas, Sathavahanas, the Kakatia dynasty, the Pallava rulers, the Mandapati dynasty and the British. Kothapatnam Beach  -  One of the most popular attractions of Ongole, this beach is located at a distance of around 25 kms from the city. Kothapatnam beach is a beautiful stretch of sand, clear water and a great feel for beach lovers. One can enjoy various beach activities including boating here. This beach is most frequented during the Karthika Purnima festival, when thousands visit to take a dip in the waters of the beach.

Vodarevu Beach  -  Vodarevu beach is a great favourite with holiday goers as it is a more of a sea-side village. Located about 63 kms from Ongole, this beach offers some breathtaking views of the surroundings with lovely swaying coconut palm trees. The golden sands and sea beckon one to enjoy some amazing beach water adventure sports. Boating, swimming, fishing etc, can also be enjoyed here.

Sri Shirdi Sai Baba Mandir  -  Sri Shirdi Sai Baba is a highly venerated shrine in the region of Ongole and is located about 46 kms away. It houses a 9ft by 9ft idol of Sri Shirdi Sai Baba and is worshipped by plenty of devotees regularly.

Tangutur  -  Tangutur is a religious site in Ongole, located at a distance of about 18 kms and exhibits some of the famous temples like the Valluru, Chennakesevalayam, Ramalayam, Shivalayam etc. There are wonderfully carved sculptures and carvings on the Chennakesevalayam and Shivalayam temples which display the great artsmanship of that period and a spectacular feature of the latter temple is the 1, 116 Shiva Lingas in it.

Bhairavakona  -  This 200 metre high waterfall in the Nallamalla Hills is a sight to behold. The hill is dotted with 8 ancient temples from the 7th and 8th centuries. The region is also famous for it’s various rare herbs that are used to cure different illnesses. Another special feature that this place is known for is that on the day of Karthika Purnima, moonlight falls on the idol of Goddess Parvati within the temple.

Chandavaram  -  Chandavaram is a buddhist’s delight, a holy place for all who follow Buddhism and much admired by other tourists as well. This marvelous structure is located on the Singarakonda Hills and is known for its design and double terraced stupa.
