Interesting Facts About Mahabaleshwar :

Mahabaleshwar is a small town in Satara district in Maharashtra and a beautiful hill station in the Sahyadri mountain range. Owing to its dense green cover, this location was chosen as a summer retreat by the British during their reign. Located at an altitude of 4, 440 feet, Mahabaleshwar is a huge plateau, surrounded by valleys on all sides and enjoys a brilliantly pleasant climate throughout the year. The best time to visit this destination is from October to June, though even the monsoons create their own magic thereafter but it gets a little difficult to travel around the hill station and enjoy the sights.

The source of the Krishna River, which flows through Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, originates at Mahabaleshwar. This source, according to folklore, supposedly originates from the mouth of a statue of a cow in the ancient temple of Mahadev in Old Mahabaleshwar. The hill station is known not only for its mesmerizing, scenic points, but also for its several streams, springs and waterfalls. This high plateau is a wonderful escape from the heat, dust and grime of the plains, with its invigorating weather and lush green landscape. The climate too is most favourable for the growth of strawberries and this hill town is known to produce almost 85% of the total quantity of strawberries in the country.

Sight-seeing in Mahabaleshwar is made convenient by the easy availability of taxis which take you to the main tourist spots. Government run buses are also available to take tourists to the main scenic spots in Mahabaleshwar and seats on these have to be booked in advance. There is no railway station in the town as yet and so travel by train is not possible.

How to reach Mahabaleshwar :

By air – The Pune International Airport at Pune is the nearest airport to Mahabaleshwar, at a distance of just 120 kms away. From here, one can hire taxis or book tickets on any of the Private or Government run buses, to take you to the hill station.

By train – The nearest railway station is at Satara, which is about 60 kms away. Cabs, private cars and several buses are available from here to take you to Mahabaleshwar. The next is at Pune, from where one can opt to travel to the hill station in either taxis or buses.

By bus – Private, as well as Government-run MSRTC buses are easily available to this hill station from Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara.

Some must-visit tourist attractions :

Wilson Point :

One of the most popular scenic spots in Mahabaleshwar is the Wilson Point, which is the highest point in Mahabaleshwar at a height of 4,721 feet and offers a spectacular view of the hill station in all directions. This is the only location from where one can take in the beautiful spectacle of both sunrise and sunset.

Arthur’s Seat :

Well known as the queen of all points, this location is named after Arthur Mallet who lost his wife and one-month old daughter in a terrible ferry accident in the Savitri River. He was known to sit here, staring at the river, hoping for his family to return to life. Located at an elevation of 1470 m above sea level, Arthur’s seat offers one the opportunity of checking out the geographical differences between the Konkan and Deccan territories of Mahabaleshwar and admiring the amazing views of the Savitri Valley on the left and the Brahma-Arayana Valley on the right.

Lingmala Waterfalls :

This scenic cascade of water is located near Mahabaleshwar, on the way to Panchgani  and falls from a height of 600 feet, straight into the Venna Lake. The waterfall is divided into sections because of projecting rocks and forms a mini waterfall which is safe to swim and play around in, while the main waterfall is a beautiful sight to enjoy. The best time to enjoy this waterfall is from July to October when it is at full flow, but it is extremely dangerous to swim in it at that time.

Venna Lake :

This is another popular location for families as well as honeymoon couples, owing to its visually appealing landscape. Bounded in by a dense cover of green trees and shrubs, this picturesque location is a delight for nature lovers and photographers. One can also enjoy horse rides along the waterfront and indulge in some tasty bites at the various eateries there. The beautiful Chhatrapati Pratapsihn Garden on the banks of the lake offer another avenue to just relax amidst nature.

The Roman Catholic Church :

This magnificent Roman Catholic Church was built in the 18th century during the British era for all the British citizens who settled in this hill station and for all those who visited. The Sunday masses and all Christian sacraments were celebrated here. The beautiful stain glass windows were painted by a British artist and are still intact.

Babington Point :

Babington Point at a height of 1,294 m overlooks the amazing Koyna and Solshi Valleys. Stunning visuals of the Chinaman Waterfalls and the hill forests surrounding it make a very impressive picture for tourists. The path leading upto it is further beautified by amazing flora and fauna and provides a wonderful trekking route to trekking enthusiasts. Resting benches scattered along the route provide one with an opportunity to just sit back and take in the wonder of nature.

Pratapgad Fort :

This majestic fort is located at a distance of 24 kms from Mahabaleshwar, is a wonderful vantage point for views of the Konkan Valley and the Raigad Fort on the west. It was at this fort that Chattrapati Shivaji fought and killed the General of Bijapur, Afzal Khan.

Panchgani :

Another heavenly mountain retreat located just 18 kms from Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani is famous its blissful climate, amazing natural beauty, picturesque old colonial structures,   quaint Parsi houses, renowned educational institutions and boarding schools. Also very well known for its strawberry farms, one can visit the Mapro garden in Panchgani which is famous for its strawberry produce and other related products, along with the enticing Annual Strawberry Festival.
